Emma Watson’s one of the most prominent young actresses of the day, she’s a role model, a teen style Icons, and a really down-to-earth individual with great personality and inner strength that makes us admire her. She’s only 19 but it’s being a while since she is into the limelight. Emma Watson’s the best possible Hermione Granger the world could ever expect to see, but she is determined to show everyone she’s no one-show actress, and she’s got so much to be respected for.
Before she became famous
Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson was born in France on April 15, 1990 to lawyer parents. She moved to England, Oxfordshire, when she was 5 after her parents divorced. She still lives there with her mother and younger brother Alex. Now Emma is the oldest of 7 siblings as her parents got remarried after the divorce. She says her family is the “secure network” and she sticks to it and to her friends to keep her feet on the ground. “I rely on them hugely and always speak to them first about everything,” she says about her parents.
By the age of nine, when she was cast to star in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001), Emma had already taken part in a number of school plays, Arthur: The Young Years, The Happy Prince, The Swallow and The Prince, and Alice in Wonderland among them, and even won 1st prize in a school poetry recital “Daisy Pratt Poetry Competition”, when she was only seven.
As a child Emma was really into dancing, singing, playing field hockey, which is still one of her favorite kinds of sport. She’s still very competitive in sports enjoying netball, tennis, and skiing, and naming painting and cooking among her fave hobbies. She also says she loves water sports and has the special Open Water PADI certificate allowing her to SCUBA dive anywhere in the world. Emma also says she loves hanging out with her friends when she has some spare time, she generally likes to be treated like a normal teenager. “We hang out in Starbucks, we go and choose CD’s, talk, go to each others houses, normal girly stuff,” as she once explained.
Emma went to The Dragon School, a famous preparatory school in Oxford from 1995 to 2001 and then went on to attend Headington School, a private all-girls school, between September 2001 and July 2006. When finishing school she achieved eight A* (the highest grade you can get) and two A passes in her GCSEs (exams after the last compulsory year of secondary school). In May 2007 she took A levels in English, Geography, Art and History of Art but later dropped History of Art to pursue the three A levels.
Getting famous
Emma had never professionally acted in movies before Harry Potter. She was cast to star in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone when she was 9. The casting for the film adaptation of J. K. Rowling’s bestselling Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone started in 1999. Casting agents travelled to many different schools in England looking for talented children to audition for the parts of Harry, Ron and Hermione. They found Watson through her Oxford theatre teacher, and the producers were impressed by her confidence. “It was the first audition I went on,” Emma Watson said in her interview for Parade magazine in 2007. “I had no idea of the scale of the film — the fame — or I would have been completely overwhelmed.” Emma recalled that she auditioned for the part as Hermione because her friends did and she thought it would “be a laugh.”
“There was no open audition—they went all over England to find these characters, and not just drama schools. They came to my school and asked if they could put forward a group of 20 children between the ages of 9 and 12. They took my photograph in the school gym, and then I got a call three weeks later,” Emma said in her inerview for Interview May 2009 issue.
It took the producers eight auditions to tell Emma and her co-stars Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) and Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley) that they had been cast as the protagonists for the film. Rowling was said to support Watson from her first screen test and after a chat on the phone with the girl, allegedly said that Emma was absolutely perfect for the role as the book’s main female character.
International success
“I could be 100 years old and in my rocker, but I’ll still be very proud that I was part of the Harry Potter films,” Emma said about her so far most successful role.
Emma’s big screen debut in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone in its UK version) was in 2001 and the film was a box-office smash making $90m during the opening weekend, thus breaking records for opening-day sales and opening weekend takings, and was the highest-grossing film of 2001. So far the movie has made over $976m worldwide. Emma’s debut as Hermione was particularly acclaimed. The Daily Telegraph called her performance “admirable”, and IGN.com said she “stole the show”.
Later Emma Watson revealed she considers Hermione Granger to be an enduring role model. “There are too many stupid girls in the media. Hermione’s not scared to be clever. I think sometimes really smart girls dumb themselves down a bit, and that’s bad,” Watson said adding though that Hermione uses all these “big long tongue twister words, I don’t know what she’s going on about half the time!”
Watson says there is quite a lot of herself in the confident and bookish Hermione. “I’m a bit of a feminist. I’m very competitive and challenging,” she said in an interview in 2007.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was the first of the five Harry Potter films Emma Watson has taken part in so far. In 2002 Emma again reprised her role as Hermione in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. The movie received mixed reviews though earning $870m worldwide. Watson’s performance was praised this time again. The movie’s director Chris Columbus was criticized by The Times for “under-employing” Watson’s character.
Emma returned to the screen in 2004 bringing along Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the third part of the Harry Potter sequel, which is Emma’s favorite book among all the Harry Potter books. This time, Watson’s role was more assertive with Emma describing her Hermione as “charismatic” and “a fantastic role to play”. Her performance, again, was highly praised. The New York Times wrote: “Luckily Mr. Radcliffe’s blandness is offset by Ms. Watson’s spiky impatience. Harry may show off his expanding wizardly skills … but Hermione … earns the loudest applause with a decidedly unmagical punch to Draco Malfoy’s deserving nose.” Nonetheless, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was the lowest grossing movie among the Harry Potter movies, making just a little bit more than $795m worldwide with only $249m domestically.
This same year 13-year-old Emma Watson was named tenth in “The Hottest Female Stars” and served on a jury to select the 2004 teenaged film-makers’ First Light Film Awards alongside such jurors like Pierce Brosnan, Kenneth Branagh, and Samantha Morton.
Watson said she had finally come to appreciate the emphasis on Hermione’s brains rather than her appearance. “When I was 9 or 10, I would get really upset when they tried to make me look geeky, but now I absolutely love it. I find it’s so much pressure to be beautiful. Hermione doesn’t care what she looks like. She’s a complete tomboy,” though adding that “it took me three films to get Hermione in jeans. To get out of the robes with the tights and the itchy jumpers.”
As for making the film, Emma confessed that the hardest scene to make was the one about toad Trevor. She said: “Neville comes up to me with his toad, Trevor, and says, ‘Do you want to kiss Trevor goodnight?’ Every time he did this I burst into laughter. I was supposed to give him an “I hate you” look, but I couldn’t help myself. It took me about eight takes to get it.” Eight takes must be a lot for Emma as she’s often referred to as One Take Watson because she usually gets her scenes done in 1 take.
Emma said that her costars, Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint, have become her really close friends. “[They’re] more than just friends, they’ve become like brothers. Or sisters, I don’t know. In fact, I don’t see them like normal boys. I mean that I cannot imagine me going out with one of them. For me, they are like my best friends. I can laugh and talk about everything with them without any taboo. I really like them a lot.” “I like being around mixed company. Dan (Daniel Radcliffe) and Rupert (Rupert Grint) definitely make their fair share of cheeky comments about me being girlie, but it’s all in good fun.”
In 2005 Emma, Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint were named number 9 on Entertainment Weekly’s Best Entertainers of the Year.
Emma Watson’s performance in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was called “touchingly earnest,” bringing her several award nominations. “Most people are really nice but some stare, like you’re some kind of zoo exhibit and not a real person with real feelings. Even when you take away all the glamour and attention and premieres and everything, it still comes down to the fact that I’m acting,” Emma said on being a public person. “I hope my head doesn’t get very big. I’m just going to keep my feet on the ground, stick to friends and family and try and lead a normal life,” she added on fame.
The same year at the age of 15, Emma Watson became the youngest person to appear on the cover of Teen Vogue magazine. This was her first cover shoot and she had “the biggest butterflies” doing it, though she thought “the clothes were to die for.”
In 2006 Emma reprised her role as Hermione for a very special occasion. It was a special mini-episode of Harry Potter in celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s 80th birthday, as a part of The Queen’s Handbag.
The fifth film in the Harry Potter sequel, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix hit movie theatres in 2007, setting another record with opening-weekend gross of $333m. On July 9, 2007 Emma Watson, Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint left imprints of their hands, feet, and wands in front of Grauman’s Chinese Theater in Hollywood.
In her interview for IGN.com Emma said Hermione played a very powerful role in this movie. “She’s the one who makes everything happen. It’s very similar to the role she had in the third one where she’s just like ‘Right, we’re going to do this and you guys are coming with me.’ She’s dragging them off everywhere so it’s really cool. It’s a powerful female role… I’d like to think that she’s a role model – definitely. I think she rocks. I don’t think there’s anyone on screen who can compete with her really, female action-hero-wise.”
When asked about her thoughts of Hermione’s future, Emma said she’d like to think Hermione and Ron will end up together. “It’s been like five films where they’ve gone at it. I hope that she uses her intelligence, her determination, grit and strength, everything that’s great about her and does something really amazing with that.”
In 2007 Emma was named number 26 on Empire Magazine’s 100 Sexiest Movie Stars. She was the third top on Yahoo! Movies Yahoo! List of 10 Most Popular Stars of 2007. The same year she was ranked number 15 on Forbes List of The 20 Top-Earning Young Superstars and number 97 on Forbes List of The Celebrity 100, earning $4m for starring in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Generally, Watson’s work in the Harry Potter series has earned her several awards and some $20 million.
Later that year there surfaced reports about Emma Watson leaving the Harry Potter project to focus on her studies. Although Radcliffe and Grint have confirmed their commitment to acting, Watson has expressed uncertainty about her future. Speaking to Newsweek in 2006, she said: “Daniel and Rupert seem so sure … I love to perform, but there are so many other things I love doing.”
But soon it was revealed that Emma is still working on the last Harry Potter movies, signing a new contract with Warner Bro in March 2007. She will return for the final two instalments: Harry Potter and the half-blood prince , due to be released on July 17, 2009, and the two parts of Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows. Filming for Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince began in late 2007.
“People underestimate what a big decision this was for me,” Watson said in her interview for Parade magazine in 2007. “This is the next three or four years of my life. Being in the spotlight and the lack of freedom are the sort of things that held me back. People will see that as ungrateful, but you never know until you’ve walked in someone else’s shoes. I love it, and that’s why I’m back, but I had to make it work for me. In the end, the pluses outweighed the minuses.”
“I wanted everything to be so perfect. I would work so hard to memorize my lines and the scene; we would have to stop shooting because I was mouthing Rupert’s and Dan’s lines at the same time. That’s something I had to get over,” she said.
“I have too many friends on the set, and I love Hermione too much,” Watson continued. “I couldn’t see anyone else playing her. It would have killed me. There’s so much of me in her,” adding that her co-stars had provided a unique support system for her. “You can’t really explain to someone what this experience is like. I’m glad that we have each other. When I was younger, they used to tease me. And now they’re quite protective.”
“The best thing about being involved in Harry Potter, is that you can make a six year old girl or boy’s day by giving them a handshake and it’s so easy. It costs me so little to make someone incredibly happy so that’s amazing and I’ve walked away and thought, ‘God I’m so lucky to be in a position that people are that excited to meet me.’ The downside is that the level of curiosity into your life means that it becomes quite intrusive and the level of criticism is hard to deal with sometimes. As for the hardest scene in Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince, Emma said it was the one with Ron kissing Lavender. “I had to cry for the first time when Hermione watches Ron kiss Lavender. It was difficult to bring up all that emotion and hurt in front of a full crew, and not just once, but over and over again from different angles,” Emma revealed in her interview for Flare magazine November 2008 issue.
December 5 to 7, 2008 ABC Family network had a Harry Potter weekend, exclusive first looks at forthcoming Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince offering a discussion of the film’s storylines by Emma Watson, Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Michael Gambon, as well as a never-before-seen footages from the movie.
In 2007 Emma Watson took part in her fist non-Harry Potter project. Ballet Shoes is the made-for-television adaptation of Noel Streatfeild’s novel of the same name that was broadcast on December 26, 2007 to an audience of 5.2 million. “I was all set to go back to school after finishing Harry Potter [and the Order of the Phoenix] but couldn’t resist Ballet Shoes. I really loved it.” “I always had concerns that I was Hermione because I looked like a Hermione – but what else did I bring? So this was the test. And it worked. Ballet Shoes was a small production, but it gave me the confidence to think I could actually have a career as an actress after the Harry Potter films. That I wouldn’t just always be Hermione.”
Watson played aspiring actress Pauline Fossil, the eldest of three sisters. “Emma was perfect for Pauline. She has a piercing, delicate aura that makes you want to gaze and gaze at her,” the Ballet Shoes director said. Though the film was described as lacking “investment, or magic, or dramatic momentum”, Watson’s performance was generally praised, with The Daily Telegraph writing it “confirmed how good child actors are these days.”
“Now that I’ve played the snotty, bossy, posh Hermione Granger, I’d like to play some American high school girl. I want to play something totally different. I want to play every kind of character and every point of view,” Emma Watson said in one of the interviews.
Watson also starred in the animated film The Tale of Despereaux, premiered on December 7, 2008. She gave her voice to the character of Princess Pea in this children’s comedy, based on the book by Kate DiCamillo. “I read the script, and I just loved it. It was so charming. I fell in love with Despereaux, so I really didn’t have a choice. I had to be his princess,” she told in the interview for MTV.
Acting is not the only thing Emma has true passion for. In June 2008, Watson signed a $5m contract to advertise with Chanel. Emma has become the spokesperson for Coco Mademoiselle, one of the label’s perfumes, replacing Keira Knightley. “I love fashion. I think it’s so important, because it’s how you show yourself to the world,” Emma once said.
Emma has also signed up to the Storm agency that also represents Kate Moss, Carla Bruni and Lily Cole. “So, in the end, I combined two loves: art and fashion and acting. I learned a lot and have found a whole new respect for the hard work models put into their work and for the couture. A love affair has begun,” she said in September 2008.
In 2008 Emma Watson was ranked number 28 on Entertainment Weekly’s ‘30 Under 30′ the actress list, she was number 94 on the Maxim magazine Hot 100 of 2008 list and number 3 on AOL’s Moviefone’s The 25 Hottest Actors Under 25 .

She won her first award in 2002 when she was only twelve – she won the Young Artist Award for Leading Young Actress for Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone, the one that brought her four more nominations – the Young Artist Awards Best Ensemble in Feature Film, Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Saturn Award, Empire Award, and the American Moviegoer Awards in the Outstanding Supporting Actress nomination.
In 2003, Watson received the Best Female Film Star Otto Award from the German magazine Die Welt for her performance in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
Although Prisoner of Azkaban remains the lowest-grossing Harry Potter film, Watson’s personal performance won her two Otto Awards and the Child Performance of the Year award from Total Film in 2004 as well as a nomination for Best Young Actress from Broadcast Film Critics Association.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire brought Emma two nominations for Best Young Actress from Broadcast Film Critics Association and MTV Movie Awards Best On-Screen Team nomination as well as Otto Awards as Best Female Film Star and ITV National Film Award for Best Female Performance.
In 2007 Emma Watson received her first National Movie Award for Best Female Performance for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. The film also brought her the Best Actress nomination from UK Sony Ericsson Empire Awards, as well as Best Movie Actress nomination from UK Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards.

“It’s really strange, trying to fit into both places. At school, I’m supposed to be a kid; and filming, I’m supposed to be an adult. I’m a teenager—I’m meant to be carefree and irresponsible and rebellious—but I have a quite serious job. Sometimes it’s hard to deal with.”
Emma once revealed she was pretty positive about working as a child actress, saying her parents and colleagues helped make her experience happy. Watson is said to be close friends with her Harry Potter co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint. And though thousands of fans round the globe really wish it weren’t so Emma said they’re nothing but friends and there has never been an attempt to turn their friendship into something more serious.
Emma says she has no interest in fame or recognition, she finds “being sexy embarrassing.” “I find this whole thing about being 18 and everyone expecting me to be this object… I find the whole concept of being ‘sexy’ embarrassing and confusing. If I do a photo-shoot people desperately want to change me – dye my hair blonder, pluck my eyebrows, give me a fringe. Then there’s the choice of clothes. I know everyone wants a picture of me in a mini-skirt. But that’s not me. I feel uncomfortable. I’d never go out in a mini-skirt. It’s nothing to do with protecting the Hermione image. “Personally, I don’t actually think it’s even that sexy,” she continued. “What’s sexy about saying, “I’m here with my boobs out and a short skirt… have a look at everything I’ve got”? My idea of sexy is that less is more. The less you reveal the more people can wonder.”
As to her private life, Emma Watson tries her best to keep it away from the spotlight. However, it was reported in October 2008 that Emma rekindled her romance with Jay Barrymore, 25-year-old banker. According to sources, her parents first didn’t approve of her boyfriend due to the seven-year age gap.
Before seeing Barrymore, Emma was spotted with Razorlight frontman Johnny Borrell in February. And after turning 18 in April 2008, Emma was seen accompanied by 19-year-old Francis Boulle, a Franco-Mauritian philosophy student at Edinburgh University, and she was also seen in several London clubs with Italian actor Roberto Agnillera, whom she met in July 2008 during an eight-week Shakespeare course at RADA.
“Finding someone that you like, or who likes you, is always difficult at my age,” Emma once noted. “But being famous complicates things much more. I suppose that some boys feel a bit intimidated by me and stay on their guard.”
When asked about making a choice between Hollywood career and happy marriage Emma said she’d rather pick a great marriage. “I think it would be amazing if I would get to play beautiful parts and win Oscars, but that would all mean nothing if my parents and friends weren’t there with me. What is success when you don’t have anybody to love? No, I’d rather be happily married.”
And when she was asked to describe herself, she said: “I think a good phrase to describe me is ‘eager to please’. It’s something I share with Hermione. We’re both terribly earnest people.”

Upcoming projects
“There was always uncertainty about me having a future in acting at all. It wasn’t like this was something I thought of as my future. After Hermione, I didn’t know whether there was anything else. You don’t know if you can exist outside of that or whether you even want that, because it was something you never really pursued in the first place.”
She says she’s going to be picky about her next role, and she would love to work with Bernardo Bertolucci. When asked if she’d do a nude role, Emma replied, “Yes. For Bernardo Bertolucci. It . . . depends. I’m not getting my kit off any time soon, but it is part of my job.”
In 2009 Emma Watson will star in Napoleon and Betsy replacing Scarlett Johansson who was originally attached to star. Johansson will serve as a producer with Benjamin Ross writing and directing the project. Watson will play Betsy Balcombe, a young impulsive noble woman trapped on the isolated British island of St. Helena who falls in love with Napoleon, after he has been exiled there.
“It’s a strong relationship but it’s not sexual,” Emma says of the movie. “It’s very complex. A touching of souls. She was a very young girl and he was this older, incredible man. I read the script two years ago and just knew this was the perfect film for me.”
The movie’s loosely based on a true story – the real Betsy was all of thirteen, and wrote a book recalling how Napoleon enjoyed playing childish games with her and her siblings.
Besides movie career Emma Watson is seriously planning to pursue her educational goals. “I would like to go to university and complete a degree and so that will mean a break from acting.” “If I stay in this country [the UK] I will read English Literature, and if I go to America I will do a Liberal Arts program. Any future projects will take second place to university.” “Jodie Foster did it, Natalie Portman did it,’ she says about the idea of staying in the movie industry and studying at the university. “I think it’s entirely possible to juggle university with filming.”
“I actually think going to university will make me a better actress. The experience of living like that, working to deadlines, living with other students. It’s all the things I want,” Emma said. “There are actresses who don’t know about things like doing their own laundry and getting a bus. I’m not going to be like that.”
“Obviously I’m looking at universities and reading lots of scripts and meeting with producers and trying to make a good decision about what my next move should be. I might be going to America - I’m looking at schools over there - but obviously I’m waiting to hear, to find out where I’ve been accepted and if I’ve been offered a place. So nothing’s been decided yet,” the actress said at BAFTAs on February 8, 2009
Earlier Emma has said that she would very much like to go to university, but she was interested in so many things that she would find it hard to choose a subject to study. “I really can’t believe I’ll be in university in September [2009]. Still haven’t decided where to go…” Emma wrote on her blog on April 15, 2009, her birthday.
“I never thought that I would want to go to America for university. As a child, I aspired to go to Oxbridge, because that’s where my parents went. When my dad talks about his time there, he says it was the most incredible experience,” Emma told Interview’s May issue.
In spring 2009 it was revealed that Emma had reportedly been signed up to star as the new face of Burberry’s ad campaign. A Burberry spokesman said: “The campaign is not yet finalised and once it is we don’t release any information until the official launch time, which would be around June of this year.”
