London, Feb 27: Australian actor Mel Gibson has said that he did not believe that Heath Ledger' death was "just an accident" regretting that he should have helped the star.

"I didn't really know the ins and outs of what was up with him, but I don't believe it was just an accident," said the star at a chat show.

The "Braveheart" star confessed that he regrets not helping Ledger, before his tragic death.

Ledger died on January 22 last year at the age of 28. His demise is believed to be caused by an accidental overdose of prescribed drugs.

However, the death of the superstar, has been shrouded in mystery with some believing that he committed suicide.

Ledger recently received an posthumous Oscar for his villainous performance as 'The Joker' in Batman comic "The Dark Knight".

"I should have called him (Ledger) years before," Gibson said.

"Maybe I could have called him...When you see sort of an impending tragedy or something that might go wrong, it just felt like I should do something about it."

The 53-year-old Australian star acted with the late Ledger in Roland Emmerich's The Patriot in 2000.

"The Passion Of The Christ" director also revealed that he had called Britney Spears following her recent troubles.

"She's a nice kid, you know," Gibson said about Spears.

"She was just going through a rough patch. You see kids that you know in the industry ...I just felt like this poor kid, she's lining up to be stoned. I just thought, 'I wonder if anyone is reaching out to her', so I just called her and she's doing great now," the star said.
